About Microcephalic Primordial Dwarfism

Microcephalic Primordial Dwarfism (MPD) is not a specific diagnosis. It is in fact a group of ultra-rare conditions in which growth is proportional but extremely delayed. This results in some of the smallest people in the world being born. This is more prevalent especially in the MOPD II disorders where the average adult height is less than 2ft 10in), compared to the average adult height of 4ft 10in for other forms dwarfism.

Collectively, the different types of MPD are caused by a change to an individual gene depending on the type of MPD. These are inherited in an Autosomal Recessive Pattern, which means that both parents were carriers of the changed gene. A very important thing to remember is that we have no control over the changes in genes, there is nothing that was done to cause it and nothing that could have been done to prevent it. To understand more about genes and genetics please visit our page on ‘Genetics and Screening’.
